“Republic and Today Through the Eyes of a Historian” panel was held

As part of the 101st anniversary events of the Republic, we hosted Muş Alparslan University

Faculty of Sports Sciences Dean and Historian Prof. Dr. Sabit Duman at the panel titled “Republic and Today Through the Eyes of a Historian” coordinated by Lecturer Neriman MORKOÇ at the Bulanık Vocational School.

In his speech at the panel, Prof. Dr. Sabit Duman touched on the republic and state perceptions of different thinkers from the first days of the Republic to the 101st year;

what the republic means for our country.

Stating that the Republic is a form of state governance in which political power is shared by the people and their representatives and is inherently based on the absence of monarchy, Prof. Dr. Sabit Duman said;

“The term republic was first used for the government established in Rome after the Etruscan kings were expelled from the country. Some historians also used this term for the ancient Greek city-states; however, since the sovereignty of the people and the equality of individuals could not be fully ensured in the Greek city-states, a full republic was not possible.

The Romans were the ones who ensured the formation of the republic as a form of state. In Rome, the individual was valued over the state and the majority of the people were granted certain political rights. However, not everyone could benefit from these rights equally.”

Emphasizing that the most important priority was to organize the new Turkish state, which was established after a struggle for independence led by Atatürk and carried out under harsh conditions with the slogan “Either independence or death”, in accordance with the requirements of the age, Prof. Dr. Sabit Duman

continued his speech as follows: “Atatürk, at the very beginning of the national struggle, aimed to establish the new Turkish state on the will of the nation and opened the Grand National Assembly in Ankara on April 23, 1920. After the victory was won, he declared the Republic, the most suitable form of government in terms of the manifestation of the will of the nation, on October 29, 1923.”

Duman, who emphasized that despite the revolutions in the past century, the Turkish nation has resolutely defended its republic and democracy in line with the will of the nation, said,

“The most important element of the establishment of the Republic is the efforts initiated to eliminate ignorance by shifting from the understanding of the Ummah to the understanding of the nation after the War of Independence. The republic was established as an enlightenment and modernization movement in order to bring the Turkish nation to a contemporary life. There were countless gains obtained with the innovations made in that period, from education to health, from agriculture to industry, from transportation to defense. The Republic of Turkey has managed to continue with the republic despite some difficulties, leaving one hundred and one years behind. It has demonstrated its determination to continue on its path with a form of government based on the will of the people.” he concluded his speech.

Our college principal İrşad Sami YUCA presented certificates of appreciation to our instructor Prof. Dr. Sabit DUMAN and concluded the panel.
